Hayek, a hospital in Beirut Lebanon, has decided to offer ONLY plant based vegan meals!

A hospital in Lebanon, called Hayek, has decided to switch its already vegan friendly menu to fully vegan, offering nothing but exclusive plant based meals for both patients and visitors. The decision came after one of the 3 owners, Georges Hayek, decided that it's ''well about time to tackle the root cause of diseases and pandemics, not just treat symptoms; for our health, for our planet, for our fellow earthlings''.

The post made on the hospital's social media said:

“Starting today, March 1, 2021, our patients will no longer wake up from surgery to be greeted with ham, cheese, milk and eggs... The very food that may have contributed to their health problems in the first place.”

Throughout the last year, with the help of one of the owners, Georges Hayek, who also happens to be the founder of Lebanese Vegans, the hospital hosted several events about plant based diets, animal rights and documentaries about exploitation of other animals for food, clothing, and more.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT

The caption of the announcement said ''There's an elephant in the room no one wants to see; When the World Health Organization WHO classifies processed meat as group 1A carcinogenic (causes cancer) same group as tobacco and red meat as group 2A carcinogenic, then serving meat in a hospital is like serving cigarettes in a hospital.

When the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) declare that 3 out of 4 new or emerging infectious diseases come from animals.

We then, have the moral responsibility to act upon and align our beliefs with our actions. Taking the courage to look at the elephant in the eye.''

A FULLY VEGAN CAFETERIA

The ground-floor of the hospital also has a fully vegan cafeteria, serving fresh Lebanese meals and sandwiches such as hummus, za'atar, vegan labneh, vegan shawarma, vegan taouk, locally made vegan cookies and more.

WHAT ABOUT MEDICATION?

In an interview with Georges Hayek, Mr. Hayek stated that unfortunately due to the nature of the current pharmaceutical industry, not all medicine is considered vegan, and in this context, the hospital cannot always provide vegan-friendly medicine, however, it will continue raising awareness about veganism and exclusive plant based diets to fight for a world where humans can live and thrive while respecting the rights of other animals.
